Some have never even driven a car, alone, outside of their city. Zac Sunderland, a 17-year-old home school student from California, is sailing around the world. Alone. He set sail on this journey almost one year ago: June 14, 2008.

This Monday, May 4th, San Jacinto Christian Academy and Zac Sunderland will engage in a live Skype video conference. The students at SJCA are going to see and hear Zac, live, from his yacht the Intrepid. Zac is nearing the completion of what will be a record-setting circumnavigational journey (youngest to sail around the world, alone), a journey that has all the drama of a Hollywood movie.

Zac has experienced sickness, alone and on the high seas, faced with the daunting task of piloting and navigating his ship during moments when most of us would crash on the couch with a box of Kleenex and a good novel. He has experienced a few situations of losing communication with his family, for days at a time, when most parents are worried if their teenager is 30-minutes past curfew on a Saturday night. And the next time you hit the snooze button on your alarm clock by your bed, remember this interesting part of Zac's duties when his radar equipment malfunctions: Zac has to wake himself up, sometimes every 20 minutes, to make sure his ship is not in the path of a sea freighter or other giant vessels...because freighters cannot swerve and avoid a collision with Zac.

Interesting note: As this blog entry is being created, Zac was only a few minutes from a port in Grenada where he will dock for some rest and relaxation. According to his mom, who publishes Zac's blog entries, Zac was worried he would miss today's Drum Festival which occurs annually in Grenada.
